Summary

So you think you're a Buddhist? Think again。 Tibetan Buddhist master Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse, one of the most creative and innovative lamas teaching today, throws down the gauntlet to the Buddhist world, challenging common misconceptions, stereotypes, and fantasies。 With wit and irony, Khyentse urges readers to move beyond the superficial trappings of Buddhism—beyond the romance with beads, incense, or exotic robes—straight to the heart of what the Buddha taught。

This short, irreverent, no-bullshit book explains why the 4 dharma seals (alternatively known as the 3 marks of existence), and especially the 1st seal or 1st mark, are the essence of Buddhism。 Dwelling on these, understanding them, and letting them change your life makes you a Buddhist。 Everything else--robes, mantras, incense, shaved heads--are nonessential。The 1st dharma seal says that all compounded things are impermanent, otherwise known as the concept of impermanence。 All of Buddhism flows This short, irreverent, no-bullshit book explains why the 4 dharma seals (alternatively known as the 3 marks of existence), and especially the 1st seal or 1st mark, are the essence of Buddhism。 Dwelling on these, understanding them, and letting them change your life makes you a Buddhist。 Everything else--robes, mantras, incense, shaved heads--are nonessential。The 1st dharma seal says that all compounded things are impermanent, otherwise known as the concept of impermanence。 All of Buddhism flows from Siddhartha Buddha's thoughts on this concept。 Because all things are impermanent, they are changing, transient, evanescent, uncertain, and are constantly being destroyed。 Thus there is no permanent self, and thus hoping--an impossible hope--that things won't change causes nothing but pain。 Not understanding impermanence is ignorance; fully understanding impermanence leads to nirvana。Clinging to anything other than the 1st dharma seal diverts you from nirvana and makes you not a Buddhist。 。。。more

So many good teachings here, just don’t cling to the flying buddha, there’s no need to。 Good material for starters as well as for advanced practitioners looking to refresh their understanding。

Хорошая книжка。 Просветления не наступило, но есть о чем подумать во время чтения。

Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse's What Makes You Not a Buddhist is perhaps the most perfectly worded book on Buddhism that I have ever read。 Here are no endless systems of classification reaching to infinity。 Instead, Khyentse discusses at length what he calls the four seals of Buddhism:(1) All compounded things are impermanent(2) All emotions are pain(3) All things have no inherent existence(4) Nirvana is beyond conceptsThere are no sesquipedalian Sanskrit terms, just a discussion of each of the four Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse's What Makes You Not a Buddhist is perhaps the most perfectly worded book on Buddhism that I have ever read。 Here are no endless systems of classification reaching to infinity。 Instead, Khyentse discusses at length what he calls the four seals of Buddhism:(1) All compounded things are impermanent(2) All emotions are pain(3) All things have no inherent existence(4) Nirvana is beyond conceptsThere are no sesquipedalian Sanskrit terms, just a discussion of each of the four seals。 No religious observances, no priests' robes, no begging bowls, no obeisances。 The author is a Tibetan/Bhutanese lama also known as Khyentse Norbu。 I will try to seek out some of his other books, as I thought this one is a winner。 。。。more

DJKR defines the four essential truths and cardinality of these, in Buddhism very nicely。 However, in later part of the book, it gets repetitive。 I feel the Buddhism is having one more core truth, which is often ignored。 It is that "The time is not continuous but discrete and collapses at every moment。" DJKR defines the four essential truths and cardinality of these, in Buddhism very nicely。 However, in later part of the book, it gets repetitive。 I feel the Buddhism is having one more core truth, which is often ignored。 It is that "The time is not continuous but discrete and collapses at every moment。" 。。。more

Interesting take on Buddhist philosophy, but the author takes an often too illusive writing manner with the humorist remarks as well as the different pop culture references。 He does a good of breaking down different concepts in Buddhism such as the 4 noble truths, but often does not elaborate on how to practice them。 I would suggest reading other Buddhism books before this one if you are interested。

This book is a good introduction to various aspects of Buddhism。 Buddhism is a religion of method rather than of truth。 Practices are there to be engaged with, rather than simply believed。Different teachers may have different ways of presenting what makes you (not) a Buddhist。 This is not a problem if the reader sees these presentations as methods。 It can also be helpful for the reader to eventually engage with a personal teacher who can direct their practice。

A highly accessible book on Buddhism。 Most of us assume Buddhism to be an ascetic religion where one gives up all worldy things and puts on a maroon robe and shaves off their hair。 But it is not about these superficial changes。The foundation of Buddhism are the four seals, or eternal truths。 As long as you follow them, you are a Buddhist, even if you are a CEO, politician or a housewife。 If you don't, adorning maroon robes and shaving your hair is not going to bring you any closer to Buddhism。Hi A highly accessible book on Buddhism。 Most of us assume Buddhism to be an ascetic religion where one gives up all worldy things and puts on a maroon robe and shaves off their hair。 But it is not about these superficial changes。The foundation of Buddhism are the four seals, or eternal truths。 As long as you follow them, you are a Buddhist, even if you are a CEO, politician or a housewife。 If you don't, adorning maroon robes and shaving your hair is not going to bring you any closer to Buddhism。Highly recommended。 The teachings are applicable to every day life, how you behave with others, with what intentions you do things, etc。 。。。more

A good short read that gives insight into the fundamentals of what Buddhism is by defining the boundaries of the philosophy。 Would highly recommend to those interested in Buddhism。

The author says a number of things that I noted in the text as things that I disagree with, which is honestly something that has led me to become somewhat jaded about Buddhist texts: they tend to speak as if they're representing one solid, monolithic opinion about 'the way Buddhism is', when in actuality I can think of other Buddhist teachers who would readily disagree with them。 For example, Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche states that karma is simply cause and effect, while I know that Ken Mcleod ve The author says a number of things that I noted in the text as things that I disagree with, which is honestly something that has led me to become somewhat jaded about Buddhist texts: they tend to speak as if they're representing one solid, monolithic opinion about 'the way Buddhism is', when in actuality I can think of other Buddhist teachers who would readily disagree with them。 For example, Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche states that karma is simply cause and effect, while I know that Ken Mcleod vehemently was against characterizing karma as simply that。 The author is also explicitly vegetarian and seems certain of the superiority of that lifestyle, while Buddhism is not explicitly vegetarian and certainly not explicitly vegan。 Overall, this book is a good and relatively short commentary on the four seals in Buddhism - namely, that all compounded (or, he says 'assembled') phenomena are impermanent, all emotions are pain, all compounded phenomena are empty of an inherent 'self', or inherent existence independent of other phenomena, and nirvana is beyond concepts。 The author makes the claim, fairly I think, that if you believe in these four statements, you are a Buddhist, and if you don't, even if you meditate, you are not a Buddhist。 I'm only giving this book three stars though because I easily grow bored with the didactic tone of these texts - the teacher sits and expounds on a topic, lecturing the reader。 There's also always this false openness to inquiry present in Buddhist studies, like "the Buddha induced his followers to investigate the truth for themselves", but if you actually reach differing conclusions than the Buddhist orthodoxy, you're deemed to have erred or not practiced correctly。 。。。more

I started reading the book considering it another do's and don'ts of Buddhism written by some western follower trying hard to play monk as much as possible but this book actually shares a good insight about the core beliefs and realizations of Buddhism。 Though I'm still naive enough to accept all of it because I don't see it driving us anyway towards our journey of space exploration and find out what lies beyond。 Though both journeys are kind of towards the same direction。。。 emptinessIn the end I started reading the book considering it another do's and don'ts of Buddhism written by some western follower trying hard to play monk as much as possible but this book actually shares a good insight about the core beliefs and realizations of Buddhism。 Though I'm still naive enough to accept all of it because I don't see it driving us anyway towards our journey of space exploration and find out what lies beyond。 Though both journeys are kind of towards the same direction。。。 emptinessIn the end he asks a very powerful question, "I have met people who condemn ancient rulers and emperors and ancient religions as the source of all conflict。 But the secular and modern world has not done any better; if anything, it has done worse。 What is it that the modern world has made better?" It kind of made me realize how we keep ourselves blinded by the belief of making great scientific advancements everyday。 However the writer couldn't help himself take a little bath in pride with Buddhism while making comparison between the other religions and demands that no Buddhists have ever indulge any genocide。 I agree, of course the government causing the second largest refugee crisis in the world by killing Rohingyas aren't true practitioners, just like the other religions claim。 。。。more

The main point is introducing The Four Seals and contemplation with basic analysis on their truth (or not)。 Everything else is slippery (or not)。 I found it an engaging read。

As a Buddhist teacher well-known in the West, Dzongsar Rinpoche often comes across as witty, incisive and ready to challenge norms, but this book in particular stands out for its concision, clarity and incredibly down-to-earth nature in representing the core of Buddhist thought。 A great read for the curious, and new and old practitioners alike。
